This past Sunday, while most folks were preparing for their Easter festivities, a dedicated cadre of shootists gathered at Ben Avery for some 1000 yard shooting. I would like to thank Norm Darnell for leading us in the morning prayer. The conditions were more than a bit testy and judging by the few scorecards turned in most just used the day as a good practice. I did see that John Hoffman used his new Palma rifle to good effect as he put up a solid 188-2X score in his third go of the day. Norm Adams put up three very consistent scores with his Palma rifle and Charles Gooding, soon to be an AZ ex patriot, defied the tricky winds and posted a very solid score in F Open. Charles tells me that he will shoot the 300M match this coming Friday and then he is off to Louisiana. We also had three of our shooters, Oliver Milanovic, Jim Cobb and Mike Kelley try out for the US National Development Team under US Nat Team Coach Phil Hayes. Its a whole different animal when you have a coach and a plotter watching your every shot and these men did very well and OI applaud them all for there efforts.
In closing I want to share a personal aside with you and caution you all to please be ever vigillant while driving. Every one of you are precious to those who know and love you and a senseless tradgedy that results in the loss of a life will forever leave pain with those left behind. Sadly this was the case with a man who figured prominantly in my own development as not only a shooter but as a man and a Marine. Lt Col. George M. VanOrden USMC Retired was struck and killed this past weekend while driving with his lovely wife Mimi in Midlothian Virginia. She remains in critical condition and I would ask you all to say a prayer for her full recovery. This horrific event was senselessly caused by a young man who decided to run from the police. George and Mimi were crossing through an intersection when this individual ran the light and T-boned their car. So please be watchful for crossing traffic as it only takes that one split second to change everything! For those of you who may have known George and want to attend or send something for his service April 5th please email me for the information. I have access to very few pictures of George but from what I was able to find I put together a tribute for him that can be viewed by clicking HERE
If Heaven has a rifle Team a true "Heavy Barrel" has joined their ranks
God bless you all,
